Minds and Hearts
Karla Calderon a school teacher and writer in her article Minds and Hearts, establishes “Education provides knowledge that opens doors for the future and promises happiness and success”. After analyzing her arguments, I can tell the article is too vague because it just refers to the general idea of education and the ideal of to be a teacher. However, through specific examples the writer shows the positive effects of education on people.
In developing her ideal of education, Calderon support her statement though her experiences of life and advisers that she received by her father. In addition Calderon underlines the advantages of education on people lives. The writer intends to show a perfect pattern of good teachers but she doesn’t mention how to do it.
On the other hand the structure of the article is a mess, disorganization is in everywhere. The first paragraph starts with a definition of an ideal teacher; nevertheless, there is no any support of experts related to education. After the definition the second paragraph is about the purpose of education and specific examples. The order of the elements of the article produces that the reader gets lost easily. Consequently the reader cannot appreciate the important message that

Calderon is trying to express that Education and teachers must develop life skill in students in order to make conscious them about their lives.
The disorganization in the article makes reader gets confuse about the real message of the article. It is difficult to identify the main purpose of Calderon’s article. Maybe is education as a solution for society problems or maybe Calderon is focus on the teachers’ job in the classroom or the teacher as a supportive person in students’ lives.
In contrast the third paragraph which refers to Calderon’s experience of life with her father who always says “power is knowledge” it is a strong argument. However her father is not an expert of education but her own story related to her own past shows how sensitive is Calderon to the importance of education and the reader feels closer to the article.
Furthermore, the writer identifies the main elements of education and she underlines the importance of trust in the relationship between teacher and student. Trust is fundamental for students because a teacher who does not believe or trust on her or his students the students probably will fail. On the other hand if a teacher trusts in her or his students, they will feel self-confidence in their students’ performance because the teacher is there to support and guide them. In addition to states the importance of the relationship between teacher-student demonstrated that Calderon is really involved in education.

So the relationship between lesson plan and students performance is vital in order to improve the academic life of a student through the classroom work. This article has an attractive style, many important teaching tips, activities and examples of designing a lesson which support their main idea, the connection between lesson plans and academic students’ results.

In any kind of relationship it is fundamental to follow a role and to know what are the duties and the responsibilities of any role that we have to do in life are. I believe Teachers and students have their own roles in the classroom. However, from the both sides do not see clearly what are their duties and responsibilities. Effective education is related to know what duties are involved in our professional role. Improve the academic life of a student in the classroom work is strongly associated with roles. If student knows what are her or his duties and teachers duties the student will have the conscious of her or his own job and he or she could demand an effective work from the teacher.

Religion in the classroom

Religion has been always a problematic topic; even some people think that talking about religion is impolite. As a teacher it is fundamental to know how to handle controversial topics. It is a fact that classrooms are integrated by heterogeneous people. So face up controversial topics in the classroom can be a challenge, because these kind of topics help to develop debates, discussion and critical thinking in our students. However to talk about religion on the classroom can be a real mess if the teacher does not have the appropriate tools. First the teacher must give an introduction about tolerance and respect. Also underline that there are not wrong points of view. Then the teacher can start with the lesson about religion. However at the beginning this kind of activity will not have immediate results. Because to develop critical mind is a long process but definitely this type of topic helps to build it up. As the program director of teaching effectiveness program highlights “ Sometimes you leave the classroom feeling exhausted and wondering if anything was really accomplished. On better days, you still leave exhausted but knowing that you have accomplished something very special”.
The are many resources that can be connect to Religion in order to increase the knowledge and the understanding. For example the Religulous movies which is a satirical documental about religion can be part of the lesson. This movie has an extreme different point of view about religions. Moreover the film was a chaos in terms of effects on people. But this extreme point of view about religion of the film let students see, analyze and understand the importance of to talk about controversial topics. Finally the main point is to integrated controversial topics in the classroom. Topics that spreading out different opinions are always worthy for students. Religion, politics, sex, drugs and many others complicated topics stimulates student’s mind. The right teacher’s behave in this type of lesson is lets and motivates students to create their own opinions and thoughts. On the other hand it is fundamental to guide student’s mind but do not influence them. .

In an academic writing it is necessary to have a position in a specific topic. Hedging means a particular position about a topic, opinion, research, etc. The writer through hedging communicates his or her point of view. Also there are different levels of hedging there are words that shows certainty, for example this must, it is important to develop, will. In this subject we had three feel(Ww) trips, two feel(Ww) trips to the ¨Cajon del Maipo¨ and one to ¨Til-Til¨, the two feel(Ww) trips to the ¨Cajon del Maipo¨ were the best. In these(Sm) I learned very much things and to(Ew) recognize some(Ew) formations of the surface.The teacher made us collect rocks, to recognize their composition, to know as were formed and where they come from.I found much rocks very beautiful, of many colours and whit(Sp) beautiful crystals, that even I saved in a box like a treasure under my bed because a (Sm)love it.Also in this feel(Ww) trip we searched for fossil. I liked a lot this activity because I found a lot( Sm)fossil that I never thought that (Sm)finding and these(Sm) are also my little treasures whit(Sp) those(Ew) I can brag.I and all my classmates enjoy very much this feel(Ww) trip, that it was an experience (Wo)unforgettable and I liked both(Ww) that I repeat(Wt) whit(Sp) my parents whit(Sp) my boyfriend and they(Sm) able to learn some things that I teach(Wt) them.

Some days ago, Gino, my best friend told me that he was playing a game on line about three civilizations; The Germans, the Gals and the Romans, the Game is called Travian. The play consist in(Wf) create a little town with one of the civilization appointed(Ww) before, then you must make grow these town until be(Ww) a big civilization. When you start the game one soldier of your town say how(Ww) you must do, first you must sow wheat and work in the mines and in the forest and you must produce mud, with this elements you can build barracks and others basics(Wf) building for your survive. When you have a town (Wo)strong with the basics elements, the soldier is leave(Wt) and the civilization is on your hands.This is a funny game (P) because you can attack others town and stole their products (Ew)for you, also you can training(Wf) many solders(Sp) different (Sm) and make business with others players (who too attack you) so is a good game, but nothing is perfect P this game is not the exception and sometimes it is a bit slow, but you can play while you (workWt) in the reports for the university. I think blogs are a fun activity. Always, the connection between technology and learning process has positve effects on the students.

It is useful because develop the writing skill, also improve grammar of the languge. The main idea is the student notices his or her grammar mistake whlie practicing writing exercises. This point for me it is difficult I do not have a clear identification of the mistakes. I know that I am going to improve because checking others blogs help in the mistake’s recognition.

I believe it is going to be beneficial for the U.Chil students because of the motivation that it has blogs.

summary

This book is about a teenager who belongs to a poor family. Billy has a difficult life, his life at the school is not easy and he works because money is never enough in home. The mother and the elder brother Jud are Billy’s family. The father left the family long time ago, the mother is not able to guide the family and the elder brother has his owns problems. Billy feels lonely and there is no adult in charge of him. Billy is 15 years old and he knows his poor situation but he has a passion he wants to domesticate a specific hawk. Oneday Billy found a nest and he adopts a hawk. This issue become an important thing in Billy’s life. In addition Billy feels that domesticate this hawk is a mission and this situation will change his life.

To check others blogs was a good task. At the beginning I thought to check English grammar mistakes is too difficult for me. Finally I could see very clear the grammar structure mistakes . This issue produces more self confidence in my learning process. This positive effect is great for students, and it is totally creative.
The reader can know a little bit about the people behind the blogs. Consequently the activity is more attractive because the student is doing something in real life. Activities which involves real life are more attractive because they have a clear objective.

I could understand her message very well but she has a lot of grammar mistakes and it is normal in her level because some time ago I had the same mistakes, for example the excessive use of to, missing words and grammar order. Finally I think she is going to improve a lot in her English learning because she is happy and this means she has a lot of motivation in learning a new language.

Students are bored of the typical homework or task so applying new kinds of exercises to the learning process is really useful.
I think to use blogs in the classroom has more positive points than negative points. Using blogs in the classroom has an important advantage because students must reflect about a topic. The depth of the topic depends on the teacher’s instructions. Sometimes the teacher can ask the students to reflect and to write about a light topic like favourite food or favourite place, etc but also it is important to write about important and profound topics. The point is to encourage our students to be informed about important issues that happened in our world. Global warming is a good topic to analyze in a blog because students can learn many things and also the student can add videos, pictures, music, etc.
I really enjoyed using blogs and I am going to use it with my future students. Using blogs in the classroom allows the students to face up to reality but also teachers make aware students about the world through an attractive and technologic activity.
The disadvantage that using blogs in the learning process has is the difficulties of checking grammar mistakes. It is necessary to check them because it is very difficult to erase mistakes from students’ minds. I believe that walking around the students in the computer lab and trying to resolve doubts is an important step. For this reason it is very important that the teachers guide students in this kind of activity. The most important thing is that the teacher must never affect the personal view of the students’ - the idea is help them to express themselves in a comprehensive way in the second language.
As a student and a future teacher, I think this kind of activities affects students’ learning process in a positive way because to do new things is always something attractive and motivating
Finally anything that can improve our learning or refresh the teaching process is welcomed by students and teachers. I like the idea of mixing teaching/ learning with the technological advances.

Compare and contrast the relevance of social class in The Commitments and Rumble Fish. How are working-class people represented in these novels?

Working class refers to a society group that must to work to survive. In comparison with others social class sometimes to work is not a necessity because family background is going to resolve money problems if a lack of money exists. A big part of the world population belongs to the working class but the big difference is the focus on the energy that people release producing money to survive.
Sometimes people produce money but with positive energy and they assume that they must work without another alternative. This case is very clear in the Commitments. All the characters were conscious of their working class condition, but they concentrate on music and they could connect something very attractive by working. They were very lucky because they could really enjoy working through the music.
On the other hand some people never assume their working class condition and their lives become hell. They want to have a lot of things without any effort and the idea of working is related to something bad. In Rumble Fish this situation is very obvious. Main characters suffer the consequences of a father who never accepts his condition. It is necessary to underline that sad and horrible episodes in lives affect and produce this stage of social resentment against to others and work.
To conclude it is very important the energy that people release through working. Maybe the work is not the appropriated but if the person assumes it with positive energy his or her life will be good and every thing will seem less difficult. Even to change this condition would be easy because in a positive stage appear new ideas, people that can help. In contrast when people release negative energy or working is relate to something negative every thing around this person will be negative.
